Mel Santa Maria's organic heather honey is produced in the Barroso region in Portugal, specifically in the municipality of Montalegre. This flowering area is found above 800 metres above sea level, where heather (Ericaarborea) and calluna (Erica umbellata) predominate, as well as oak (Quercus faginea).
This honey is regularly honoured in the organic honey category (National Competition of Portuguese Honeys) and won gold medal in 2017.
Heather honey is dark in colour, with a strong, intense flavour and a deeply accentuated smell.
