Orange Mustard, 120 g

Mostarda di Arance is a truly unique Italian condiment that may come as a surprise to those who are not familiar with traditional Northern Italian (especially Lombardy) cuisine.

Despite the name “mustard”, this is not the mustard you would think of at first (like traditional Dijon, English or simple yellow mustard). Rather, it is a sweet and spicy fruit preparation, more like a chutney made from candied fruit and mustard essence. Mostarda di Arance has its roots in the centuries-old culinary tradition of the Mantua region of Lombardy.

This special version is made from organic Sicilian oranges in January and February. The oranges are carefully chopped, slowly candied in sugar syrup to bring out their bright sweet and sour taste, and then a few drops of mustard flavor are added. The essential oils in the orange peel form a special blend with the mustard flavor, giving the product an incredibly bright citrus scent, a sweet taste and a slightly spicy taste from the mustard - which is what makes it so special.

This method was originally used by farmers to extend the storage of seasonal produce.

Use it as an elegant accompaniment to mature, characterful cheeses (e.g., Parmesan), offer it with rich cold cuts, roasted meats, sausages, or even to enrich the flavor of creative dishes. Add it carefully, due to its intense flavor, even a small amount is enough.
