There is a difference between canned tuna and canned tuna. Filetes de Atum is not minced or chopped tuna: carefully prepared, meaty tuna fillets go into the can with olive oil. It is a simple recipe, which is why the fish itself takes center stage.
The tuna meat is firm yet tender, with a full, but not overly powerful flavor. The olive oil keeps the fillets succulent and beautifully complements the fish's natural, slightly salty, maritime character.
Conservas Santos represents the canned fish culture of the Algarve, in the south of Portugal. Its range includes a whole host of Portuguese classics: sardines, mackerel, and tuna, from the simplest olive oil versions to recipes prepared with lemon, piri-piri, or herbs.
Several fish products with more unique flavors have already arrived at Sol Deli from the brand, but this tuna is all about simplicity: good fish, olive oil, and nothing extra.
How to eat it?
Even straight from the can! :)
With a slice of rustic bread, olives, and pickled peppers, you already have a Portuguese-inspired light lunch or tapas.
It is excellent in salads, on toast, and in sandwiches, but it also turns a simple tomato and white bean salad into a complete meal in moments. And the olive oil shouldn't be poured away either: use it to mop up with bread or drizzle it over your salad.
Serving tip: tomatoes, red onion, hard-boiled eggs, olives, and a few nice pieces of tuna fillet – accompanied by a glass of chilled Portuguese vinho verde.
