Muhammara is a Middle Eastern dip or spread based on roasted red peppers and walnuts, characterized by its savory, sweet, and slightly smoky flavors, with a hint of spiciness. It bears a resemblance to the Spanish romesco sauce.
Besides the two major ingedients, roasted red pepper and walnuts, it also contains other ingredients that may vary from one area to another. Its origin is the Syrian city of Aleppo, although there are sources that place its origins in Lebanon.
Rosara has made their own adaptation of this wonderful recipe based on beechwood-roasted piquillo peppers, walnuts, arbequina extra virgin olive oil, the famous pomegranate juice concentrate (with no added sugar) - an essential ingredient in Arab and Persian cuisine -, and a few other ingredients that balance the flavour of this dish, which is full of piquillo peppers (including the smoky roast) and at the same time has a subtle sweet touch with very light spicy notes. It is served as part of the mezze platter, an appetizer course.
Muhammara is enjoyed as a dip with bread, used as a spread for toast, and served as a sauce for kebabs, grilled meats, fish, jacket potato and many more....and fish.
We recommend eating our Muhammara at room temperature or cold.
