Antica Passione

Collection: Ancient Passion

Operating in the fertile plains of Campania Felix in Southern Italy, the Antica Passione cooperative is much more than a producer of culinary preserves and food products – its mission is to regenerate the land, revitalize communities, and reaffirm the cultural dignity of agricultural traditions that are at risk.

In 2019, Antica Passione social cooperative was born out of both necessity and conviction. Since then, it has woven local heritage, ethical labor practices, and transparent food production into every product.

For Antica Passione, quality is not only measured by taste – it is defined by a respect for people, place, and history that underpins every step they take in agriculture and production.

Campania – historically celebrated as Campania Felix ("fertile land") – has been Italy's agricultural heartland for centuries, its rich volcanic soil providing a significant portion of the world's most valuable raw materials. In recent decades, however, economic changes, industrial restructuring, and the shadow of organized crime in some areas have jeopardized not only traditional agricultural livelihoods but also the culture of land management.

Antica Passione was founded in this context, near Naples, in the city of Acerra, directly following the closure of a tomato processing plant and the subsequent challenges. Instead of resigning themselves to decline, the founders – producers and community activists – decided to reclaim agricultural initiative. The result was a cooperative that not only processes tomatoes and vegetables but also rebuilds a local food system that offers pride, dignity, and opportunities to its members.

Antica Passione is deeply committed to social agriculture – a model that goes far beyond organic or artisanal production. The cooperative deliberately builds its practice on the idea that agriculture can contribute to solving wider social problems: rural depopulation, economic exclusion, exploitation, and land vulnerability.

The cooperative cultivates and processes crops grown in areas free from mafia control or at risk of exploitation, thereby ensuring an ethical and dignified supply chain. Local producers and workers are not commodities but collaborators: labour is legally employed, fairly paid, and protected from systemic abuses plaguing the region's agricultural sector, such as caporalato (illegal labour brokering).

Through partnerships with Campania's producers and small agricultural businesses, Antica Passione not only secures high-quality ingredients but also helps sustain the rural economy and a transparent food ecosystem that values human rights as much as taste.

From the Land to the Jar: Crafting Authentic Italian Staples

Antica Passione primarily produces canned tomatoes and vegetable-based products, but its philosophy distinguishes all its offerings. The cooperative operates with meticulous quality control at every phase: crops are selected at harvest, processed on the day of arrival, and preserved using traditional techniques that highlight freshness without unnecessary additives.

San Marzano DOP: A Symbol of the Campanian Terroir

One of the gems in Antica Passione's product range is the Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino DOP, one of Italy's most renowned tomato varieties.

Grown on the mineral-rich soils between the towns of Sarno and Nocera, San Marzano tomatoes are famed for their sweet yet balanced acidity, firm texture, and intense aroma. The D.O.P. (Protected Designation of Origin) certification means these tomatoes are not merely an ingredient but a cultural symbol—a product of the terroir that reflects both place and tradition.

Antica Passione's San Marzano products—whether peeled or as rich tomato pulp—showcase the fruit's natural complexity without artificial enhancers. These tomatoes form the basis of numerous sauces and preserves, bringing the distinctive flavour of Campania to kitchens beyond Italy's southern regions.

Ragùs, Sughi, Creations, and Culinary Heritage

Their offerings extend far beyond simple pelati and passata. Antica Passione presents a diverse selection of sughi (sauces) and ready-made meals designed to celebrate regional recipes and creative interpretations of Italian classics.

Each product is prepared without added preservatives, using Italian ingredients wherever possible, maintaining authenticity, traceability, and a direct connection to the soils and seasons of Campania.

Preserving Traditions, Building the Future

Antica Passione stands at the intersection of gastronomy and community building. Through its commitment to agricultural sustainability, ethical labour, and exploitation-free land use, the cooperative is not just a brand but a movement that believes good food should also do good in the world.

Every jar of sugo or canned tomatoes encapsulates a story of renewal: of land spared from abandonment, of traditions kept alive by dedicated farmers, and of a supply chain built on transparency and respect. With their work, Antica Passione invites us not merely to taste the flavours of Campania but to understand the profound connection between food, community, and justice—a passion that is truly ancient and more relevant today than ever before.
