Meatballs (polpette) in tomato sauce, 500 g

The Antica Passione cooperative from Campania prepares traditional dishes of Italian – and specifically Neapolitan – cuisine in ready-to-use jars. For their products, they strive to use Italian ingredients, simple recipes, and avoid preservatives; their range includes everything from classic tomato sauces and vegetable creams to Neapolitan ragù and various Southern Italian specialties.

The Polpette al Sugo, or meatballs cooked in tomato sauce, is a true classic of Italian home cooking. It is a simple, hearty dish with countless family variations: the soft, juicy meatballs are slowly simmered together with the rich tomato sauce, allowing the flavors of the meat and tomato to meld perfectly.

Antica Passione's meatballs are made from ground beef and pork, enriched with bread, eggs, and Grana Padano DOP cheese. The meatballs are surrounded by a thick tomato sauce made from tomato passata and tomato paste, with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.

The result is a full, homemade-tasting dish: soft meatballs, an intense tomato base, and the delicate, savory, cheesy character of Grana Padano.

The 500-gram jar is a complete meal in itself: it just needs to be heated up and can be served with fresh, crusty bread. It is also excellent with pasta in the classic Italian way – mix the tomato sauce with freshly cooked pasta and serve the meatballs on the side – or it can make for a hearty lunch or dinner with polenta, mashed potatoes, or grilled vegetables.

When serving, a little freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano, a few basil leaves, and a few drops of good extra virgin olive oil complete the dish.
